Ask us your preserving problem

Stuck on something — a recipe that keeps failing, a food you don't know how to put up safely, a method that confuses you? Tell us what you're trying to do. We can't promise an answer to everything, but if you tell us clearly, we'll do our best to research a safe, properly-sourced answer and publish it here on the site. No guarantees — just our honest best.

⚠️ Not for food-poisoning emergencies.

If you've eaten something you suspect is contaminated — bulging lid, off odour, foamy liquid on opening, or symptoms of botulism (blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness) — this is a medical emergency. Call 911 or go to an emergency department. Don't wait for us.

How this works

  1. You tell us the problem — what you're preserving, what's going wrong, and what you've already tried.
  2. We research it against tested Canadian sources (Bernardin, Health Canada, CFIA, provincial ministries).
  3. We publish the answer as a guide on the site — and if you leave your email, we'll tell you when it's up.

What we will and won't do

  • We will turn a real, common problem into a properly-sourced guide for everyone who hits the same wall.
  • We won't diagnose your specific batch over email — we point you to a tested source instead, and we never invent a processing time, headspace, or pH to fill a gap. If we can't source it safely, we'll say so.
  • We don't give medical advice. For anything health-related, call your doctor or your provincial public health authority.

Tell us about it

Email is optional. If you'd rather just write us directly, email [email protected].

We only use your email to reply or to tell you when your answer is published — never sold, never spammed. See our Privacy Policy.

If your email program didn't open, copy your question into an email to [email protected].

Food safety: HarvestGuide.ca publishes tested methods drawn from Health Canada and Bernardin. Home canning carries real risks, including botulism, if procedures, jar sizes, or processing times are altered. Always follow a tested recipe and adjust processing time for your altitude.
